PtoctorU is the name of a remote invigilation tool used by some colleges. The Open University is trialling online invigilation on a number of modules. At the time of writing, (December 2025), this is being trialled on one mathematics module, Essential mathematics 2 (MST125), as well as a number of modules in business, finance and taxation. Students are told there is no alternative to an online invigilated exam for those modules.

ProctorU is bad for a number of reasons at the Open University.

  • Students are told they must agree to additional terms and conditions specified by third-party service providers (who may be based outside of the UK). The Open University states "If you do not wish to agree to additional terms and conditions, you should choose a different module and contact your student support team (SST)." The terms and conditions are unacceptable to many.
